A hostage situation was taking place in the prison in Heerhugowaard on Tuesday. A prisoner took two fellow prisoners hostage. After a few hours, the hostage situation was over, reports the Judicial Institutions Agency (DJI).
The prisoner held two fellow detainees in a common room. The police were present and, together with a special team from the prison, tried to “get the situation under control”, a DJI spokesperson said.
This has now been achieved. Everyone was unharmed. The hostage taker has been arrested.
The prison in Heerhugowaard consists of two buildings. In total there is room for 340 male prisoners.
