Former Rabobank director Jacob Klompien will draw up an economic agenda for Groningen and North Drenthe in the coming year.

The manager at basketball club Donar and chairman of the supervisory board of football club FC Groningen will do this on behalf of the municipalities in and around the earthquake area, the water boards, the province of Groningen and the government.

Nij Begun

With his experience of over thirty years in management positions at Rabobank, Klompien will work ‘as a process director and connector’ to keep the regional economy attractive and strengthen small and medium-sized businesses. 4.5 billion euros is available for the next thirty years as part of the government’s ‘Nij Begun’ response to the parliamentary inquiry into natural gas extraction in Groningen.

Klompien will also be tasked with making a proposal before the end of this year about the distribution of the money and how the implementation should be organized. He must take into account damage repair and reinforcement in the earthquake area and work together with former politician Henk Nijboer, who has been appointed as quartermaster for the social agenda.

Schuiling happy with Klompien

The appointment committee has a lot of confidence in Klompien, says chairman Koen Schuiling, mayor of Groningen. “It is someone who, with his experience and broad network in the Groningen business community, will think about how we can put wind in the sails of the northern economy with the financial resources from Nij Begun. The opportunities are endless and this will help us take advantage of them.”

Klompien is honored. “We are at the beginning of an extremely challenging process and we are working with enthusiasm to implement the future plans together with all kinds of parties.”
