“It is truly sad that a beautifully electrified company like Nyrstar meets the government’s target for achieving a green industry, but now has to cry out for help. Even sadder is that this company is only one of 90 companies that are not helped by this same government. One company is an incident, two companies is a coincidence, three companies is a pattern,” said Theo Henrar, chairman of FME.

Everyone agrees that the industry must become more sustainable. We just have to wait for the next company to get into serious trouble. This is because other countries actively support their industry and the Netherlands does not. This creates an uneven playing field. The increase in costs and taxes are a structural problem. In particular, the discontinuation of Indirect Cost Compensation for sustainable electricity.

Fair playing field

Every year, a company like Nyrstar loses out on €75 to €90 million compared to other countries in Europe. It can’t be like this anymore. The cabinet is seeing blind and hearing deaf. Ministers Van Weyenberg of Finance and Jetten of Climate and Energy must make it possible to operate profitably green in the Netherlands. There must be a fair and level playing field in Europe, these ministers cannot practice ostrich politics about this.

Come up with measures

Theo Henrar: “Companies are scratching their heads as to whether they should continue to make their investments in the Netherlands. Even though the cabinet is outgoing, my appeal to Ministers Van Weyenberg and Jetten is: come up with measures and clarity before the next company collapses.”
