Sports Match of the week

PEIZE – Peize is champion! The first champion in the amateur standard class of the northern district. Peize won 0-3 on Thursday evening in Veelerveen and thus secured the championship that had been up in the air for weeks. Justifiably crowned the winner five rounds before the end of the competition.

The team played in Veelerveen a typical championship match at times. ‘With some excitement, but especially great to be able to celebrate together on a Thursday evening that we are champions. Enjoyed the team and the development we have made, the young boys have grown and are looking forward to continuing this with the same group in the 2nd division next season,” said coach Hofman. ‘We started this match in Veelerveen fantastically with a great goal by Kelvin Wekema who shot the ball into the intersection from 25 meters, then plenty of opportunities to increase the lead, but it was difficult to play football because Veelerveen did not really turn it into a match. Daan van der Veen’s 0-2 felt like a reasonable relief and then we soon had to wait for the final signal, Ivar Cats’ 0-3 was a nice ending and we all rushed into the field after which the referee affloot! Then a big party and we will continue with that on Sunday!!

On Sunday the team met Weerdinge at home. The Peizen residents at the sports complex were of course in good spirits. In October, chairman Harm Jan Danker will say goodbye as chairman of vv Peize after 10 years. When asked about his best experiences, he first mentions his fellow board members. “You can’t function if these people don’t perform their duties.” This moves fellow board member Gerard Mensinga so much that he emotionally offers a bouquet of tulips to the chairman. Secondly, the president sees the realization of the Sports House for moving and sporty Peize. ‘This has been the saving grace for the existing sports hall.’ Danker really enjoys the youth and elderly people who exercise and play sports on the sports field. ‘Of course the deception of last season’s relegation is still fresh in our minds, but this championship makes us forget that.’ Before the chairman leaves, there are still a number of jobs to be completed: ‘the installation of electricity requires great care and the water supply will also have to be realized. In addition, the access road needs to be addressed. And hopefully a decision will be made soon about the redevelopment of the fields.’ Niek van Leijsen and Eric Berghuis, co-directors, characterize Danker as a sincere, loyal and import real Peizenaar. ‘He puts a lot of time and energy into the club to keep it running well.’ The selection is an excellent compliment. During the relegation, football was mainly played with words and this successful season is characterized by the players’ drive to take action.

Captain Simon Wekema is also having a solid and fortunately injury-free season. He must take into account the cartilage in his knees. The playing group gives him the opportunity to miss training every now and then. “This confidence is nice and also gives me a stable season,” said a satisfied captain. ‘We would do anything for each other. We took a step back last season, but this season we took two steps forward with the championship.’ As a fellow board member, he is also closely involved in the realization of the Sports House.

Trainer Elte Hofman is the man behind the sporting success. ‘After the relegation we continued to develop as a team. The young players have continued to grow.’ He is somewhat surprised by the rapid development of those young players. He is therefore happy and proud of his young team.

After the achieved and celebrated championship last Thursday in Veelerveen, the match against Weerdinge was actually no match, because Peize was better and stronger on all fronts. The fast Ivar Cats certainly had it on his hips. A corner from Danny Kregel landed on the head of Guido Rossing in the 22nd minute. The header ended up out of reach for the Weerdinge keeper in the far corner. The spell was broken and Peize wanted to decide the match quickly. Two minutes later, Cats was defeated in the penalty area. Top scorer Maurijn Timmer was responsible for this. He took the penalty too early because the referee had not blown his whistle yet. In the second instance, Timmer shot onto the crossbar, but Daan van der Veen was attentive and scored the 2-0. Two misses by Simon Wekema forced goalkeeper Lennart Renkema to make two excellent saves. Cats was played on the right and the dribbler passed around a number of Weerdinge players and the ball was ready for Maurijn Timmer. The striker failed, but on the rebound it was Patrick Timmer who scored the 3-0. Peize slowed down a bit in the second half but remained the better. Trainer Hofman changed no fewer than 4 players at the same time. Substitute Mels van Leijen headed in the 4-0 from a cross from Dion Wekema. A misunderstanding between goalkeeper Renkema and Wilt Vlietstra gave Weerdinge the only goal. The 4-1 final score was a fact and after the final whistle the champions could celebrate again on the field and in the canteen.

Line-up: Renkema; Westerhof; Vlietstra; S. Wekema (Gritter); Rossing(van Leijen); Kregel; K. Wekema (R. Renkema); van der Veen (Bies); cats; M. Timmer; P. Timmer (D. Wekema)
