nai010 publishers announces the 37th edition of the Architecture in the Netherlands Yearbook. This is an overview of the past architectural year that will be launched in collaboration with AIR on Thursday, May 30, from 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM. With this, the organization also gives the starting signal for the Rotterdam Architecture Month. The launch will be followed by a podcast series by Landmassa and an excursion to one of the projects in the autumn.

The selection of 28 projects in this edition of the yearbook covers only 0.15% of the projects built in the Netherlands in a year. Sustainability and reuse are a common thread within this year’s selection, as is the high demand for affordable housing.

But what about the other 99.85% that makes up the annual construction production? We think we know an awful lot about our environment – but to what extent do we really know anything? Looking at the most pressing themes in society – sustainability, inclusivity and the economy – it appears that reliable statistics are often missing or inadequate. Where are there opportunities to collectively build new knowledge? How can architects explore and clarify their political place? How do we create space for more quality, imagination and enthusiasm?

Led by moderator Dore van Duivenbode, we will answer these and other questions with various guests:

  • Esther Agricola (BPD),
  • Jeroen de Willigen (De Zwarte Hond, BNA),
  • Fahid Minhas (director of NEPROM, former member of the House of Representatives),
  • Wilma Kempinga (Mrs. Meijer),
  • Nina Aalbers (Making Architecture),
  • Rick ten Doeschate (CIVIC Architects),
  • Rubén Dario Kleimeer (architectural photographer)
  • The editorial staff Uri Gilad (Office Winhov), Stephan Petermann (MANN and VOLUME) and Annuska Pronkhorst (Crimson Historians & Urbanists).

About the yearbook

Architecture in the Netherlands has existed since 1988; Each edition is a retrospective and source of inspiration for anyone interested in Dutch architecture or professionally involved in it. Every year, a three-person editorial team presents in this publication a reflection on the past architectural year in the form of essays, as well as a selection of sensational projects that reflect the state of the profession.

The editorial staff of the 2023 / 2024 yearbook consists of Uri Gilad (Office Winhov), Stephan Petermann (MANN and VOLUME) and Annuska Pronkhorst (Crimson Historians & Urbanists).

Podcast: the yearbook in detail

Landmassa is the ‘friendliest architecture podcast in the Netherlands’. Hosts Ariadne Onclin and Michelle Gulickx discuss their shared interest in the built environment in all its facets with a curious, critical eye: the things that strike them, the people and organizations that shape this and the people who experience it. In the summer of 2024, all three editors of the Architecture in the Netherlands yearbook will be guests on the podcast. In three episodes, the editors discuss a striking detail in the project in question with the architect.
