It seems that in about two months, Utrecht residents will no longer have to advance the parking costs of their visitors if they want a discount. The municipality says it is working on an additional function in the now controversial parking app.

Utrecht has had a new parking app since November 1 last year. When the news became known, there was already a lot of criticism and this became worse after the introduction of the system. For example, residents must advance the discount for visitors or, for example, informal caregivers themselves. There was a lot of criticism about this because they then had to ask for that money back.

Councilor Lot van Hooijdonk said December 2023 that ‘a lot of things’ did not go well. “The impact has been greatly underestimated.” There was also a vote of no confidence against the councilor, but he did not obtain a majority.

In February the municipality announced that it is working on improvements to the app and it can now be read that a trial will be conducted in May and June with a select group of Utrecht residents, whereby visitors will pay themselves. “This functionality is pioneering for Utrecht from a national perspective. […] If this trial goes well, we will offer this functionality at the end of the second quarter,” the council writes.
