In the run-up to the king’s visit next Saturday, a slightly different column than usual from Jan Veenstra. Because how often has the royal family actually been to Southeast Drenthe since 1900? Columnist Jan Veenstra made an overview of service visits.


July 4, 1907: Queen Wilhelmina and Prince Hendrik visit the South-East corner of Drenthe. They are received enthusiastically and show interest in the peat digging in Valthermond.

September 1914: Prince Hendrik unofficially visits Emmen during an extraordinary general meeting of the Dutch Red Cross.

May 1917: A huge peat fire hits the Zuidoosthoek, with 15 deaths in Valthermond and a lot of damage. The Royal couple visits the affected areas.

December 1921: Queen Wilhelmina makes an unexpected visit to the peat area because of the ongoing need there.

1924: Major festivities in Emmen and surrounding areas on the occasion of the visit of Queen Wilhelmina and Prince Hendrik.

Autumn 1927: Prince Hendrik visits Emmen alone.

August 28, 1928: Royal visit to Drenthe, first the vocational school for girls in Coevorden was visited, then the drive was to the cardboard factory in Coevorden. Via neighborhoods in Coevorden, one visits Dalen, then via Holsloot to Nieuw Amsterdam, which made an impression as a center of horticulture with its first horticultural school.

August 29, 1928: ‘In the morning at nine o’clock they leave from the station via Willemsoord, Zuid-Barge, Oranjedorp to the community center in Nieuw-Dordrecht. At the Dutch Reformed Church, the daughter of the mayor Bouma will present a bouquet to Princess Juliana on behalf of the schoolchildren from the municipality of Emmen.

July 1939: Prince Bernhard makes an exploratory trip through Drenthe. During his visit, Prince Bernhard made a tour through Emmen in an open car, where he was accompanied by the Queen’s Commissioner in Drenthe.

November 19, 1945: Princess Juliana visits nursery school in Emmen.

July 16, 1947: Queen Wilhelmina visits Emmen. On this occasion, the Queen also received, among others, the parents of the military police Harmannus Henderikus Bontjer from Erica, who was on guard in front of the Queen’s home in London when he died as a result of a bombing in 1944.

June 1 and 2, 1950: Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard visit Drenthe. The couple had lunch at the Lyceum in Emmen on June 2. Visits to the sites of the Dutch Petroleum Company in Schoonebeek and Coevorden and to Emmen are scheduled for the afternoon of the second day.

November 18, 1955: Queen Juliana visits Drenthe and then takes a tour of Emmermeer.

July 6, 1961: Queen Juliana visited Emmen in Drenthe, where she toured the AKU factories. The manufacture of synthetic fibers is one of the company’s main products

September 8, 1972: Queen Juliana receives an ovation in Coevorden.

September 19-21, 1973: Princess Beatrix and Prince Claus. Make a working visit to Drenthe, including Emmen.

July 1975: Queen Juliana during the Drentse Rijwiel four-day event and shouted as she drove into the press photographers somewhat anxiously: “Get out of the way, gentlemen, for your own good.”

October 1, 1976: Queen Beatrix visits Valthermond.

June 20, 1980: Queen Beatrix and Prince Claus continued their tour of the Netherlands with an official visit to Drenthe.

1985: Queen Beatrix visits the Biochron containing the famous Butterfly Garden. in the Noorderdierenpark in Emmen.

1997: Queen Beatrix visits Southeast Drenthe and visits the municipalities: Sleen, Oosterhesselen, Dalen, Coevorden, Schoonebeek and Emmen.

October 1998: Queen Beatrix, Prime Minister Wim Kok and Minister Bram Peper come to take stock. In case of flooding in Erica.

June 4, 2003: Queen Beatrix opens peat art project Peatpolis.nl Veenpark in Barger-Compascuum.

June 19, 2009: Queen Beatrix visits Village Views in Coevorden and visited the sculpture project ‘Village Views’, which was created with the cooperation of residents of Schoonoord, Wezuperbrug, Wezup, Zweeloo, Aalden, Meppen, Oosterhesselen and Gees

Jun 2, 2010: Her Majesty the Queen will open the largest radio telescope in the world: LOFAR on Saturday afternoon, June 12, in the municipality of Borger-Odoorn (Drenthe).

February 17, 2015: King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima visit the Peat Colonies and the royal couple will discuss the windmills planned there.

March 18, 2016: This afternoon, amid great interest from guests and the press, His Majesty King Willem-Alexander presented WILDLANDS Adventure Zoo Emmen
opened.

April 27, 2024: King Willem-Alexander celebrates his birthday in Emmen.
