The girl who died in an accident was found on Tuesday evening after the control room received a report of a burglary at a building on Geldersekade around a quarter to twelve. A group of young people, including two 16-year-old boys, had forced open a door leading to a house above a café. When police officers arrived on the scene, the two boys fled outside where they were arrested by police.
Shortly before, someone appeared to have fallen from a great height from the same building, officers heard after the boys’ arrest. It turned out to be the 16-year-old girl. She was seriously injured by the fall and was resuscitated in the street. She died later that night in a hospital.
The two boys were released on Wednesday afternoon, “because there is no reason to detain them at this time,” a police spokesperson said on Wednesday evening.
‘Beloved student’
The girl was in the fifth year of pre-university education at the St. Nicolaaslyceum. The school’s students and teachers are “extremely sad and devastated by the loss of a much-loved student due to a tragic accident,” says headmaster Hubert Roza.
The school learned of the incident on Wednesday morning, after which teachers informed the students and all class activities were canceled. In the afternoon, the students were given the opportunity to come to school ‘to share their grief with each other’, according to Roza. Professional help was available. According to Roza, about 150 students came to school in the afternoon.
The school has explicitly invited all students, including those who misbehaved last week during an exam stunt that got out of hand.
Two important witnesses
The police have started an investigation into the circumstances and are taking various scenarios into account. It could be an accident, but it could also be a crime. It is not yet known what the link is between the girl and the two boys who entered the building.
The police have made public (unrecognizable) images of a man and a woman who witnessed the girl’s fall and could possibly tell more about what happened. “We think that these are two important witnesses who can help the police further with the investigation,” said a police spokesperson.
