In Central Groningen, 66.3 out of every 1,000 adults own a motorcycle. Is that a lot? In the province of Groningen, this number is only lower in Het Hogeland (65.9) and Groningen (30.8). Proportionally, the most motorcycles – 80.8 – operate in the province of Groningen in Westerwolde. The total number of motorcycles registered in the Netherlands on January 1 was 703,000, according to Statistics Netherlands.

Of that number, 108,000 motorcycles were registered to someone aged 65 or older at the beginning of this year. That was 38,000 more than 5 years ago.

75 to 85 year olds

Especially 75 to 85 year olds increasingly have a motorcycle to their name. At 17,000, this was 80 percent more than at the beginning of 2019. Motorcycle ownership also increased in other age groups, except among 45 to 55-year-olds.

Private

Of all the motorcycles in our country, 684,000 are registered to a private individual. Of these, 28 percent are between 55 and 65 years old and 21 percent between 45 and 55 years old.

Young people

The number of motorcycles owned by young people aged 18 to 25 has also grown in recent years, to 23,000 at the beginning of this year. That is 30 percent more than 5 years ago and 8 percent more than at the beginning of 2023.

Driving license possession

The increase in motorcycle ownership among people aged 65+ is also reflected in driving license ownership. At the beginning of 2024, 370,000 people in this age group had a Dutch motorcycle license. That is 28 percent more than 5 years ago. Among 18 to 25-year-olds, driving license ownership increased by 24 percent in that period, from more than 23,000 to 29,000.

Woman

On average, 2 in 10 motorcycle license holders are women. Between 2019 and 2024, the number of women with a motorcycle license increased by 11 percent. There were especially more women aged 55+ with a motorcycle license: 50 percent more than 5 years ago. But the number of motorcycle licenses also increased among women up to 25 years old, by 32 percent.

Motorcycle ownership as of January 1, 2024 in the province of Groningen. Number per 1,000 adults:

Westerwolde: 80.8; Pekela: 77.7; Eems Delta: 75.4; Westerkwartier: 74.2; Oldambt: 72.3; Veendam: 69.8; Stadskanaal: 68.3; Central Groningen: 66.3; The Hogeland: 65.9 and Groningen: 30.8.
