On Thursday, May 9, 2024, Ascension Day, Geleen will be the BBQ hotspot of the south for the third year in a row.
This day the BBQ event takes place in the center of Geleen Smokey South place. Have your tastiest hamburger creation judged by the jury and who knows, your hamburger might be crowned the tastiest hamburger in Limburg. In addition to the hamburger competition there are Limburg barbecuers competing for the title: Limburg Barbecue Champion 2024.
In addition to the Limburg championship, there are also several master classes to be followed by Jord Althuizen (Smokey Goodness) and Gert-Jan (Demoslager), among others. They provide five workshops. At the barbecue market, visitors can attend demonstrations and become acquainted with the latest trends in barbecue. There are also barbecue books, sauces, rubs, knives and more for sale. Of course, the inner man has also been taken into account. The tastiest BBQ dishes can be ordered from various food providers. In addition to a snack, you can also enjoy a drink. Tonnie’s Viniellie and Henk & Ton from the Janse Bagge Bend provide the musical accompaniment.

To participate in the hamburger competition you do not have to register in advance, but report to the competition organization on the day itself. The organization provides 200 grams of raw freshly ground beef plus bread and a number of workbenches and barbecues that can be used on site.
The competition for it Limburg Barbecue Championship consists of two categories. For the first category, each team makes a delicious hamburger sandwich. This is a complete dish including barbecued vegetables and a carbohydrate-rich side dish. The second category is the chef’s choice, where the chef puts together his or her signature dish. A highly expert jury determines a winner per category. The overall winner will be declared Barbecue Champion of Limburg and will receive, among other things, a nice trophy and a cash prize of 250 euros! In 2023, after a heated battle, team captain Louis Kentjens from Herten of team Sjmaak and Deertown was declared Barbecue Champion of Limburg for the second year in a row.
