Quarreling brothers hint at Oasis reunion: ‘If Manchester City win the Champions League’ | show

--

With the possible reunion of Oasis, the most toxic brotherly quarrel in the music world seems to be settled. British fans hope that Noel and Liam Gallagher, water and fire, bite their tongues for a while.

Noel Gallagher summed up the aversion to his brother in one of his funny and deadly one-liners. “I liked my mom until she gave birth to Liam,” he once sneered. The sentence, written by a journalist from ‘The Guardian’, made the chances of an Oasis reunion even smaller. The super band, the face of Britpop, never seemed to step on stage together again. And now the quarrel of all quarrels seems to have been settled.

“If Manchester City win the Champions League, I’ll call my brother and bring the fucking band together,” Liam Gallagher responded on Twitter when asked if there was any truth to the rumors of a four-day gig at the Knebworth estate, north of London. The man with the shortest fuse in the music world caused a madness with this comment. Little binds the duo, except the love for their club.

Attraction

If the truce is not the calm before a new storm, Oasis will perform in front of a total of 500,000 spectators in two years’ time. Neither Liam nor Noel can free up space in the tour schedule before then. Nearly three decades after the release of their first album, ‘Definitely Maybe’, their appeal remains huge. Whether it actually gets off the ground depends on the uncompromising brothers.

The feud, which led to a rift in 2009, did not stem from any specific incident. The duo took each other’s blood from under the nails from the breakthrough. They attacked each other with chairs in studios, beat cricket bats, cursed each other in interviews and fought dead drunk in Spain. The documentary ‘Supersonic’ exposed the toxic relationship in all its grossness.

Fuel

“Oh no, Noel doesn’t have time to attend the premiere,” Liam boasted about this. “He’s in one of his huge houses, probably eating tofu during a facial. Isn’t that right, man of the people?” Noel, once a socialist from a working-class neighborhood in Manchester, showed that he had become more right-wing. It fueled Liam to smash the debris of their relationship to dust with a sledgehammer.

The attack in the Manchester Arena initially seemed to blow away the last bit of binder. During the One Love concert – for the victims and the next of kin – Liam sang ‘Don’t look back in anger’, adopted as the city’s anthem during the mourning period, on his own. Brother Noel performed elsewhere with his band High Flying Birds. Liam didn’t fail to throw this act of “selfishness” into the air.

Surprise

The aftermath of a duet with Chris Martin at the cricket stadium on the same evening caused astonishment. Liam had called Coldplay’s foreman “houseplant,” “pastor,” and “geography teacher” in the past. “Fucking hell,” said Liam with his usual preference for swear words. “I take back everything I said about you. You sound ‘fucking’ good.” Without alcohol and drugs in his body, Liam turned out to be more pleasant than expected.

Noel, who composed the lion’s share of famous songs like “Wonderwall” and “Champagne Supernova,” once called his younger brother “the most angry guy on the planet, a man with a fork in a world of soup.” The attack at the Arena gave Liam a spoon. His anger subsided, resulting in a possible reunion. If Liam keeps his word and Manchester City win the Champions League on June 10 as expected, Oasis will return. Unless the gentlemen still find a reason to hate each other in the old-fashioned way.
