Only the skeleton remains of the roof of the pigsty of the Coppens pig farm on the Molenakker in Boekel, where a raging fire raged on Sunday evening. On Monday morning, the damage to the stable can only be clearly seen in daylight. “You can still smell the burning smell at the site on Monday morning, mixed with the pig smell,” says our reporter. A 30-year-old man from Venhorst has been arrested. Police suspect that he may have played a role in the start of the fire.

According to a spokesperson for the safety region, four thousand piglets were said to have died in the fire. Later in the day, a veterinarian checks the pigs that survived the fire.

Good fire-resistant measures
The fire was discovered around half past eleven on Sunday evening. Because the fire could spread to other stables on the site, the fire brigade quickly scaled up the fire.

To extinguish the fire safely, the company’s power was turned off. The fire was under control around a quarter past three in the morning. The fire was limited to one stable. According to the police, transfer to other stables was prevented by the fire-resistant measures that the farmer had taken.

Firefighters had to extinguish the fire before they could go in to try to save the animals.

Arson
The police suspect arson. A suspect has been arrested, a 30-year-old man from Venhorst.

The fire released a lot of smoke. People living near the pig farm therefore received a NL Alert with the advice to stay away from smoke and close windows and doors.
