At least five people have died in a serious bus accident on the A9 near Leipzig, Germany. Dozens of injured people are also taken into account, German media report.

A serious accident involving a bus occurred around 9.45 am on the A9 near Leipzig, the German police reported on X.

According to German media, the bus left the road and crashed into trees along the road. The vehicle then overturned. According to German media, it concerns a FlixBus. There were 53 passengers and 2 drivers on the bus at the time of the accident.

At least five people have died. Other passengers were injured, but the exact number is still unclear. According to local media, fifty injured and ten seriously injured are expected.

Five helicopters were reportedly deployed. It is not clear whether these are police or trauma helicopters.

The A9 is an important connection between Munich and Berlin. The highway is closed in both directions due to the accident.

The serious bus accident is not the first on this part of the highway. In May 2019, a similar accident occurred about 15 kilometers further south on the A9. A bus also overturned then. One woman was killed and more than seventy others were injured. Some were in serious condition.
