The Public Prosecution Service has demanded a twelve-year prison sentence against Suraj A. The thirty-year-old man caused an accident in Rotterdam on Boxing Day 2022, killing a man, a woman and their seven-year-old daughter.

The public prosecutor said in the Rotterdam court that she sees evidence for triple manslaughter. “An entire family was literally wiped out in one fell swoop.” After the prison sentence, A. is not allowed to drive a vehicle for ten years, according to the Public Prosecution Service.

According to the Public Prosecution Service, A. had drunk three times the permitted amount of alcohol. He also allegedly ran a red light at too high a speed. He was driving between 134 and 170 kilometers per hour.

The accident took place on December 26, 2022 at 5:53 am on Groene Kruisplein. This is a major traffic intersection in South Rotterdam with an exit from the A15 motorway. There is a maximum speed of 80 kilometers per hour at that location.

“What sane person thinks they can drive through a red light at such a speed?” the officer wondered out loud. She spoke of a kamikaze action, in which the suspect consciously ran the risk of dying himself. “The suspect used his car as a weapon.”

The accident killed a 35-year-old woman from Spijkenisse, a 36-year-old man from Helmond and a 7-year-old girl from Spijkenisse.

‘Victims didn’t stand a chance’

The family’s car overturned as a result of the collision. The occupants were then thrown from the vehicle. “The victims didn’t stand a chance,” the prosecutor said.

A. says he remembers nothing about the accident. He also told the court that he does not remember drinking alcohol. But ambulance workers found that the man was “quite a loser”.

A. himself was seriously injured and underwent several operations. His lawyer argued that his client was treated inhumanely in prison. His kidney complications were allegedly not recognized by prison staff.

A. ended up in solitary confinement instead of in a hospital, the lawyer said. He therefore argued for a sentence reduction of one year.

The judge will make a ruling on April 16.
