More than 12,000 affected cargo bike owners of the Babboe brand have reported to one of the claims sites of law firm Birkway, the office reports. That is 3,500 more than a week ago. Birkway is investigating the possibilities for compensation for those affected.

On the website bakfietsclaim.nl, the law firm makes an inventory of how many victims there are and what problems they experience. The reports come not only from the Netherlands, but also from France and Germany, among others.

Earlier on Tuesday, Babboe announced that it must recall even more cargo bikes due to safety risks. According to the manufacturer, this now concerns a total of 22,000 bicycles. That is a third of all Babboe cargo bikes sold.

In February, the company announced that it would recall the Babboe City and Babboe Mini models. At that time it involved approximately ten thousand cargo bikes. This happened after dozens of complaints about broken frames.

The additional models now recalled are the City Mountain (pre-2020), Slim Mountain & Transporter and the Pro Trike, Trike-E and Pro-Trike XL Motor.

All customers who are subject to the recall and have a cargo bike that is less than five years old will be offered a new one. For cargo bikes that are older, the current value is taken into account. Owners can then use this when purchasing a new cargo bike. According to Babboe, customers are also always offered a new (normal) bicycle.

Bicycles collected from mid-April

The first cargo bikes will be collected in the Netherlands and Germany in mid-April. Models will later be recalled in other countries.

The recall is being carried out in consultation with the regulator NVWA. Part of this decision is that Babboe can also start selling cargo bikes again.

At the end of March, the NVWA announced that Babboe had misled the regulator during inspections. The company did this by hiding broken frames. The supervisory authority subsequently launched a criminal investigation. Babboe says he will cooperate in this.

The NVWA says in a response that Babboe has not yet provided all the documents and data to prove that the affected models are safe enough to be allowed on the road again.
