UPDATEHussein Bouzambou will retire from Groene Ster Vlissingen at the end of this season. He can no longer combine his position as trainer/coach of the Walcheren premier league indoor football team with his work and private life. “I’m putting it on the back burner for a while,” says Bouzambou, who is in his first season with the Walcheren formation.

“We regret his decision,” said board member André Siereveld. “We sat down together in January and we both had the intention of continuing together. Groene Ster is really his club and he has been there from the beginning. He also fit well within this group. But yes, it is no longer possible for him to combine it anymore.”

“It is wiser for now to take a pause,” says Bouzambou. “A few weeks ago I became a father and my work (Bouzambou is a social worker) is sometimes irregular. As a player I was used to playing football six days a week, but being a coach is even more intensive. I am also someone who puts a lot of time into it. I prepare extensively for training, because I believe there should be an idea behind it. I also watch images of matches. Don’t forget that I am away from home for a long time on match days. Last Sunday we went to Veenendaal, left at half past eleven in the morning and I was back at nine in the evening. That’s too much for now. Yes, I was a bit wrong about that.”

Return

So De Vlissinger takes a moment to pause, but it is not a final farewell. “I invested a lot to get my coaching diploma,” Bouzambou explains. “I am now taking some distance, but I hope to one day return as head coach of Groene Ster. That is, if the club wants me back again, of course. I will certainly continue to attend the home games. It has also been a fun year. The first half of the season was difficult due to injuries, but after that we had a good period.”

Last week, Groene Ster competed in group B for a spot in the play-offs for the national title. However, the Walcheren team did itself a disservice last Friday by losing at home to Scagha’66 (2-5). As a result, the difference in points with leader HV/Veerhuys increased to five points, with two more matches to go. Only the number one has a chance of a so-called bridge match for the play-offs. “We’re going to try to make it a nice ending,” Bouzambou remains combative.

He informed the club last week, after which a search for a successor immediately began. Siereveld: “We do have some candidates in mind, but the pool from which we have to draw is not too large. Moreover, it is already late in the season, so many trainers are already tied up.”
