Toomaj Salehi, a popular rapper in Iran, has been sentenced to death for his involvement in protests. These flared up after the death of Mahsa Amini, who died in a police cell. Iranian media report this based on Salehi’s lawyer.

Salehi was arrested in 2022 for his public expressions of support for the protests. He was initially given a prison sentence of six years and three months. Due to the actions of the Supreme Court, he was not sentenced to death.

In November last year, the rapper was briefly released on bail.

A court in Isfahan now rules that he will still receive the death penalty. According to the lawyer, this is contrary to the court’s ruling. “We will certainly appeal against this ruling,” he said.

Salehi was one of the first people to express support for the anti-government protests in Iran. He posted many critical texts about political and social issues on social media.

The wave of protests in Iran started after the death of Mahsa Amini. The young woman died after being arrested by the vice squad. She allegedly did not adhere to the strict Islamic dress code. Women in Iran are required to cover their hair, but these rules are increasingly not being followed.

Nine people have already been executed for their role in the protests. These included cases in which (fatal) violence had been used against the security services.
