Mud on the stairs, used towels. A few weeks ago, Edwin Evers heard with surprise from his maid what the guest room at his house in Hardenberg looked like. The radio DJ doesn’t think about it anymore. Until he suddenly sees something on a camera. “Then the penny dropped.”

“A bizarre story.” For example, Evers starts talking about what he has experienced during his program Evers & Co on Radio 538 on Friday afternoon. It all takes place in the garage next to his house in Hardenberg. Above the garage he created a space with bedrooms and a shower for guests.

“About three weeks ago the maid came and said it was a mess up there. The stairs are full of mud, the cushions are dirty, there are towels everywhere. I said: that’s not possible, because no one has slept there.”

Evers goes to take a look himself and sees that it indeed looks as if someone has been sleeping. “But you think: that’s not possible. So it’s cleared up and I didn’t think about it anymore.”

Half past two in the morning

Then Evers says that about five weeks ago he suddenly saw something strange on a camera, while he was working in his studio around half past two in the morning. “I see on the camera someone with a bicycle standing in front of my fence. He was looking at my house.” Evers decides to leave it at that.

But then he notices something again this Thursday when he looks at the camera. “I’m working in the studio, look at the camera and see someone I don’t know walking behind the garage. I was completely shocked. And then the penny dropped in one go,” Evers refers to the mess that his maid found earlier.

He calls the police and eventually they manage to arrest a man. Evers is stunned. “So that guy lived there for about five weeks: slept, laid out his clothes, showered. We got upstairs and the shower was still warm. I was in complete disarray. It’s such a strange feeling having someone in your house. It’s very scary.”

According to the police, it is a 43-year-old man from Hardenberg. The man was arrested on Thursday and is still in custody.

Sad and pathetic

According to Evers, it appears to be a confused person without shelter. It is unclear exactly how the intruder got in. Evers does not want to provide any further explanation and leaves it at what he said about it on the radio.

“Why doesn’t anyone help him? Why does he have to cycle around and sleep at someone’s house?” he asks himself in the broadcast. “I was very angry, but not anymore. It is a very sad and pathetic story.”
