In the run-up to the Olympic qualifying tournament for the handball players, national coach Per Johansson does not want to discuss the reason for Yvette Broch’s withdrawal. However, the Swede doubts whether he wants to call her up at all.

“I really wanted her there, but I have to respect that she doesn’t want to,” Johansson said at a press moment in the run-up to the OKT in Torrevieja, Spain. “Then you will ask: why? But that is between her and me.”

The 33-year-old Broch said no to the Dutch team for years, until last year she suddenly answered ‘yes’ to the question whether she wanted to participate in the World Cup. The circle player then announced that she wanted to go to the Games, but has now thanked the tournament in which she is competing for an Olympic ticket.

“It was great to work with Yvette at the World Cup,” said Johansson. The coach has recently combined his work at the Dutch team with his work at the Hungarian top club Györ. He also meets Broch there. “She’s a damn good player,” he continued with a sigh.

“She helped our team in a fantastic way at the World Cup and, moreover, she has a unique profile as a handball player. No one can replace her qualities. That is annoying for me, but also for her. It is a shame that we cannot continue her career in a great way. can end.”

Johansson: ‘Broch must tell it’

Until 2017, Broch was a certainty for the Netherlands, which joined the world top during that period. In 2016 she finished fourth with the Dutch team at the Games. Five years later, Broch was absent because she did not want to be vaccinated against COVID-19.

Broch recently said that she did not want to go out with the Dutch team for a long time for physical reasons. She wanted to use the international breaks to recharge for the matches at her club. Last year Broch already said that she will end her career after the season.

Johansson spoke with Broch at length recently and says that she should explain why she is not joining the national team. “There are feelings and emotions behind her decision. I don’t want to go into that. She has to say that, but it is complicated.”

Will Broch still be in the picture once an Olympic ticket has been secured? Johansson has doubts. “The chance is small. I don’t want to answer that now, but I’m in doubt. I can well imagine that teammates are also confused by it.”
