Lorena Wiebes makes a striking victory gesture in Scheldeprijs: “With the team we have something with Jan Smit”

Video Lorena Wiebes has retained her undefeated status in the Scheldeprijs. The SD Worx rider sprinted to victory in Schoten – for the fourth time in four editions. “I think it was a very fair sprint at the end,” she said in the flash interview afterwards.

Wiebes beat Charlotte Kool, her former lead-out, in the bunch sprint. “I saw that Balsamo went to the left. At that moment I also turned on. We were fighting a bit for her wheel. I didn’t have Barbara (Guarischi, ed.) and Lotte (Kopecky, ed.) with me today, so I had to find my own way a bit. The girls did great. They chased hard so I could sprint.”

“In such a sprint everything has to be in place, especially if you don’t have a real last lead-out. The chance of being trapped is simply very high. It was a little more pushing and pulling, but it turned out fine.”

Wiebes won by a bike length difference and was therefore able to triumph comprehensively. She made a striking victory gesture: she spread her arms and flapped them. “With the team we have something with Jan Smit and this was Outlaw“, she laughingly referred to a song by the Dutch singer. “I have in the Tour of Drenthe My guitar done. Now I have to think about the next one.”

Last Sunday, Wiebes rode the Tour of Flanders, but she recovered well from her efforts the High Mass. “The sprint felt good and I am already looking forward to Paris-Roubaix.”
