Although Ajax is doing everything it can to keep it on board next summer, it knows that it could be a difficult story. Especially if the Amsterdammer also plays a good European Championship with the Dutch team after a personally strong season at Ajax. If Brobbey leaves, Bart Sanders sees an interesting candidate to replace the current first striker. Milik was already under contract in Amsterdam in the past.

Ajax took over the Polish attacker on loan from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2014 and signed him permanently a year later for just under three million euros. Milik would eventually play 76 games for Ajax 1, scoring 47 times and providing 21 assists. He thus exceeded all expectations in Amsterdam. “He was presented a bit as a kind of Appie Happie striker. A tall guy, we didn’t really know what to expect from him,” Sanders says in the Pantelic Podcast. “He really had a torpedo left leg. I was a fan of his from the start. At one point he just kept scoring.”

Sanders is referring to Milik’s second and last season in Amsterdam service. He scored 24 times in 42 matches in all competitions, 21 of which he scored in the Eredivisie. Although he was unable to prevent Ajax from missing out on the national title for the second consecutive season, he did earn a top transfer to Napoli. His transition involved an amount of 32 million euros. “I think one of Overmars’ record sales and one of his best examples,” says Sanders. “To Napoli for 32 million, where he played a lot in the beginning. Then (after a year in Marseille, ed.) he went to Juventus and now he only sits on the bench there as a 30-year-old. As far as I’m concerned, it would be a very interesting candidate if Brobbey were to leave,” he said.

According to Sanders, Ajax would be wise to look for a striker who knows what it is like to play football at Ajax. In addition, Milik has ‘international experience’ and, not unimportantly, a good sense of purpose. “He has all that. He is not a typical Ajax striker, not at all. But he did do very good things. So I think Milik is a very interesting player and he has done very well in that short period. You have to be that honest.” Milik has made thirty appearances for Juventus so far this season. He scored seven times.
