The draw between Ajax and Excelsior certainly pleased NEC coach Rogier Meijer. NEC is a direct competitor of the Amsterdam superpower, and the coach was therefore only too happy that Ajax did not win in the Johan Cruijff ArenA. NEC – AZ is scheduled for Sunday afternoon at 12.15 pm in the Eredivisie. Meijer gives his findings about the important match with a view to the play-offs.

Excelsior even had a 1-2 lead at Ajax on Thursday, but the match ultimately ended in a 2-2 draw. NEC is happy with Ajax’s two loss points. “We would like to see that, of course,” Meijer is noted by Voetbal International. “If Ajax does not win, the difference remains small. In fact, if we beat AZ, we will beat Ajax. That gives us extra energy.”

NEC’s previous match was the cup final in De Kuip against Feyenoord. Even though NEC was able to keep up with Feyenoord for a long time, the Rotterdam team won 1-0 thanks to a goal by Igor Paixão. “I was able to come to terms with the defeat. The next day it was very sad, but after that you quickly move on to what is coming. That is also part of it,” Meijer explains.

The cup final has no further influence on the match against AZ, says the NEC coach. “We have been working towards an extremely important match for a period. Then it’s nice to get fresh. If we had won, we would have done the same. We discussed the cup final again, then we focused on AZ.”
