According to trainer Xavi, FC Barcelona does not intend to sell Frenkie de Jong. The Spanish coach was asked questions on Sunday about the sporting future of the Dutch national team.

“Frenkie is a key player for me,” Xavi said at the press conference ahead of Monday’s home match against Valencia. “That hasn’t changed at all.”

The subject came up due to rumors about a possible departure of De Jong. According to the Spanish newspaper ASH Barcelona is willing to sell the midfielder, because he can yield a significant transfer fee for the financially ailing club.

The 26-year-old De Jong still has a contract at Camp Nou until the summer of 2026. The Dutchman is in his fifth season in Barcelona.

Last week, De Jong dropped out with an ankle injury in the Clásico loss against Real Madrid (3-2). According to KNVB doctor Edwin Goedhart, the European Championship is not in danger for the midfielder. Spanish media report that he will need five weeks to recover.

“Frenkie has been unfortunate with injuries, but he has always reached the top level,” said Xavi. “I consider him a crucial player.”

Xavi announced on Thursday that he will remain at Barcelona. In January, the 44-year-old trainer said that despite a contract that runs until mid-2025, he thought it was time to leave. After discussions with chairman Joan Laporta, among others, he came to different insights.
