Artificial Intelligence is currently the hot topic in the tech field. AI therefore also plays an important role in the Samsung S24 models. In addition, these new smartphones have numerous small and larger improvements compared to their predecessors. Tweakers Partners and Samsung organized a test panel around the Samsung Galaxy S24, Samsung Galaxy S24+ and Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. We asked five tweakers from Belgium and the Netherlands to put the phones through their paces. We have summarized the most striking experiences of the community for you.

Samsung is fully committed to AI applications in its new smartphone line-up, which, among other things, should lead to even better and more beautiful results when taking photos and videos. In addition, smarter, AI-based software should make it possible to remove language barriers when having live conversations and sending messages and emails. Add to that the improved battery life, higher screen quality and more smart camera options, and you can say that the Samsung Galaxy S24 devices have good credentials.

Don’t have time to read all the reviews in detail at the moment, but are you curious about the findings of the test panel? Below we have prepared a handy recap video for you in which Kristiaan Asscheman summarizes the most important findings of the community for you. Would you like more background information and are you curious about the user experiences? Then read on.

Samsung Galaxy S24

Community member Farscape 2 has started working with the ‘entry-level model’, the S24 with 128MB of storage space, in a yellow version. He is happy with the compact size and finds the device solid and, above all, comfortable to hold: “Its small size makes this one of the few telephones that you can comfortably operate with one hand.”

Farscape 2 is also pleased with the screen. According to him, it offers “excellent visibility in bright sunlight”, with saturated colors and convincing HDR videos. The adaptive brightness switches quickly, so the screen always looks optimal, according to the tweaker. Thanks to LTPO OLED technology, the refresh rate varies between 24Hz and 120Hz, which saves battery charge and ensures that videos play smoothly at their natural refresh rate, without stuttering.

He thinks the battery life is good and he doesn’t necessarily need the extremely fast charging: “After using the phone for a week and a half, I arrived at an average battery life of 1 day and 7 hours. Usage was mixed, with a lot of background audio playback over Bluetooth and browsing. I logged about 4.5 hours of screen-on time.”

He is also satisfied with the cameras. According to the tester, the system is fast and it takes sharp photos that – especially compared to devices from a few Galaxy generations ago – look natural: “Colors look realistic, without an overly saturated ‘Samsung’ effect. Compared to my previous Motorola Razr 40, the camera system is a real breath of fresh air. But also compared to my Pixel 6, the camera system is slightly better and faster, and it produces nicer pictures.”

Farscape 2 has tested the AI tools very extensively; a good reason to read his review, in our opinion. He particularly appreciates Circle to Search for its ease of use and the ability to get good results from any app with simple hand movements. He praises its functionality in various situations, such as identifying dog breeds and plant species, and even watching YouTube videos. He sees the fact that most AI tools can also work locally, i.e. without a data connection, as an important advantage.

Samsung Galaxy S24+

Two tweakers have started working on the Samsung Galaxy S24 Plus.

Tester mambo No 5 has chosen to review the S24+ from the perspective of someone who has used the S20+ with satisfaction for years. He finds the build quality and sturdiness of the Samsung Galaxy S24+ to be excellent, with good fit of parts and no noticeable play. Tester SuperVeloce agrees: “The device looks and feels sturdy and solid. It fits nicely in the hand. The smartphone has a good finish and exudes quality.”

SuperVeloce is also pleased with the screen: “A nice change is the option to set the screen to a resolution of 3120x1440p, for an extra sharp image in combination with a smooth refresh rate of 120Hz. Another significant improvement is the maximum brightness; the S24+ can scale up to 2600 nits. This way you can continue to use your phone properly, even in bright sunshine.”

For mambo No 5, the screen is logically a big step forward after years of using the S20+. Despite similar resolutions, the S24+’s screen has a larger surface area, significantly higher peak brightness – 2600 nits versus the S20+’s 1200 nits – and “maintains a constant 120Hz refresh rate at any resolution, unlike the S20+ which only has the higher refresh rate.” at a lower resolution.”

The combination of high resolution and smooth animations contributes to a better viewing experience, he believes. “Personally, I value better image quality more than super smooth animations, but the combination of both is very pleasant. All in all an absolute plus, even though I haven’t missed the higher refresh rate so far. In a sense, unknown makes you unloved.”

SuperVeloce is pleased with the battery life of the 4900mAh battery of the Samsung Galaxy S24+, which lasts 1.5 to 2 days. Charging at a maximum of 45W is considered adequate, although in practice it often amounts to around 28W, which is slower than what is possible with some competing devices. Fully charging the battery took about 1.5 hours.

According to SuperVeloce, the AI functions, such as Circle to Search, AI Photo Assist and the ability to create summaries, have added value, although support for Dutch is currently lacking and some functions work better when the device is set to English. For mambo No 5, the AI applications are not necessarily decisive: “The use of AI is less interesting for me personally. These are all features in the nice-to-have department, but not strictly necessary for a smartphone.”

When it comes to the camera work, mambo No 5 is particularly pleased with the zoom functions: “One of the biggest selling points of the S24+ is that zoom photos are actually usable, unlike the transparent mush that the S20+ manages to produce at such zoom levels. I understand that the digital ‘higher’ zoom photos are digitally optimized using Samsung Galaxy AI Zoom.”

Tester SuperVeloce notes that in terms of photo and video functions, the S24+ offers similar hardware to its predecessor, but has improved photo processing software. In his review he juxtaposes a series of exactly the same photos taken with the S24 Plus and the iPhone 4 Pro Max. He is enthusiastic about the results of both devices. “They both take great photos. Which one you like better is mainly a matter of taste.”

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra

The most expensive model, the S24 Ultra, has the heaviest specifications and the most options. To start with, Haasje26 is happy with the look & feel of the device: “You expect a luxurious finish from a premium phone and that is exactly what you get. The phone feels ‘clean’ and premium.” RoelsRules adds: “After opening the box you immediately see that you are dealing with a top model from the Galaxy line. It exudes a certain luxury and solidity, partly due to the use of titanium.”

The screen also appeals to both gentlemen: “The AMOLED screen looks fantastic. In bright environments, the screen is easy to read and it is clear what is on the screen. The refresh rate, which varies between 1 and 120Hz, makes the phone feel even faster,” says Haasje26. Tester RoelsRules summarizes his experience as follows: “What. A. Wonderful. Screen …”

Both tweakers are also satisfied in the field of photography. According to RoelsRules, the S24 Ultra takes beautiful photos: “Under good lighting conditions, the photos the device takes are of excellent quality. In more limited lighting conditions, the Ultra struggles a bit, but if you can keep it still long enough, it still works fine. The software usually takes more than usable photos.” Haasje26: “Photos look beautiful. They are sharp, not oversaturated and the detail is clearly visible. This phone also manages to take beautiful snapshots in dark scenarios.”

The smart AI tools can Haasje26: “The addition of Galaxy AI is interesting. Circle to Search is incredibly easy to use and makes quick searching just that little bit more convenient. Editing photos with AI is also fun, although this is mainly a function that comes in handy when you need it. Maybe someone is just walking past a building you’re capturing and you want that person out of the picture, or you want to get rid of a reflection. The fact that the device has small features that make this possible can help enormously.” He does, however, make an important note: “The question is how long we can use these Galaxy AI functions. Samsung has stated in the conditions that it can and may put some functions behind a paywall.”

Conclusion

All testers are enthusiastic about the S24 models. The S24 and S24+ receive five stars from all tweakers and both S24 Ultra reviewers give the device they tested four stars. The shared opinion is that the S24 line-up is at the top of the more expensive smartphone segment, but the switch may be too small if you already have a device from the S23 series. If you have an older model and you switch to one of the S24 smartphones, the difference is enormous. In all cases, you get a super-fast phone that has many modern, smart gadgets and can take very nice photos.
