The birds are starting to whistle, the sun is slowly shining: spring is coming! High time to brighten up your home with a colorful bunch of tulips. When you buy a bunch of tulips, you naturally want to enjoy them for as long as possible. But how do you prevent the tulips from quickly wilting or drooping? We share a number of care tips.
1. Cut stems straight
We are of course used to cutting flowers at an angle so that they absorb as much water as possible. Yet many people claim that tulips are better cut straight. This has to do with the fact that tulips absorb a lot of water in a short time, making the top heavy and the flowers inside no time to hang. By cutting the stems straight, you keep the opening for the water as small as possible and your tulips will stay beautiful longer.

2. Choose a tall vase
Tulips grow very quickly, and even after you put them in the vase they can still grow a few centimeters longer. Therefore, always choose a vase that is high enough! To provide the tulips with sufficient support, the vase must reach at least halfway up the stems. Do you notice that the tulips have grown too far again after a few days? Then of course you can always cut a piece off.
3. Leave in the packaging
Another tip to prevent your tulips from drooping: do not remove them immediately from the packaging, but cut them in the foil or paper and place them in the vase with the packaging for an hour. This ensures that the flowers come into good shape and will also remain upright later.
4. Be careful with sunlight
Do not place your bouquet in full sun, but choose a cool place without direct sunlight. Tulips are quite light sensitive and will open quickly in direct sun. In addition, do not place them directly above the heating, because that will not make your tulips happy either.
5. Bottom of fresh water
Although tulips are very happy with water, it is better not to fill the vase to the brim. In fact, your tulips will be happiest with just a splash of cold water. Too much water causes the stem to become weak, and of course we don’t want that. Make sure you top up and change the water regularly. This way your tulips stay alive longer!
6. Stay away from the fruit basket
Tulips and the fruit basket? Not a good combination. Fruit produces ethylene gas, a kind of aging substance. And that substance also ensures that your tulips wither faster! Therefore, do not place your bouquet near a fruit bowl, but give it a different spot in your home.
