Samsung Galaxy A54 vs Galaxy S21 FE

The Samsung Galaxy A54 promises to be one of the most popular smartphones of the year again. It offers excellent specifications at a reasonable price, although it is more expensive than its predecessor. As a result, this phone ends up in the waters of the older, but higher positioned Samsung Galaxy S21 FE.

You can currently buy both smartphones for around 500 euros. They also both have a beautiful 6.4 inch OLED screen with a refresh rate of 120Hz for smooth images. So what are the differences? We walk you through them in this Samsung Galaxy A54 vs Galaxy S21 FE comparison.

Samsung Galaxy S21 FE

1.Hardware

The biggest difference is in the hardware. The Galaxy A54 runs on an Exynos 1380 chip from Samsung itself. That is a great processor for basic tasks such as texting and emailing, but it is less suitable for playing demanding games. The Galaxy S21 FE features a much faster Snapdragon 888 chip. We found it two years ago in the flagships of that time and it still holds its own.

The S21 FE has an advantage, especially if you play games, although the basic model has ‘only’ 6GB of RAM. The Galaxy A54 has 8GB RAM on board as standard. If you want 8GB of RAM on the S21 FE, you should go for the more expensive model, which also offers 256GB of storage instead of 128GB. This variant will cost you about six bucks extra.

2. Cameras

The Samsung Galaxy S21 FE is a ‘stripped down’ flagship. That means that it has many features that we know from more expensive smartphones. For example, it has the same 12-megapixel main camera on board as the normal Galaxy S21. That is a great specimen, which also performs well in the dark. In addition, you get a 12-megapixel wide-angle lens for wider pictures and an 8-megapixel telephoto lens to zoom in 3x optically.

Because the Galaxy A54 is lower in the ranking, it has to do without a telephoto lens. It does have the same wide-angle lens as the S21 FE and a 5-megapixel macro camera for close-ups. The renewed main camera shoots pictures of 50 megapixels. It is probably not inferior to that of the S21 FE.

In short, you miss a telephoto lens with the A54, but you get a macro camera in return. Furthermore, the smartphones in this area are very similar. This also applies to the selfie camera, which has a resolution of 32 megapixels on both smartphones.

3. Battery and charging

Samsung is not fond of fast charging. A large part of its smartphones, whether cheap or expensive, charges at 25 Watts. This also applies to the A54 and S21 FE. The second device does have the advantage that you can also use it to fill up battery juice wirelessly. In that case, the speed is 15 Watt.

In terms of battery life, the Galaxy A54 wins. Not only is the battery larger at 5000 mAh than the 4500 mAh one in the S21 FE, it also has a more economical processor. How big the difference is, of course, depends on your use. But if you want to use your phone for as long as possible, it is better to go for the A54.

4. Design

Viewed from the front, the smartphones look similar. They are also available in the same colours: black, green, purple and white. The Galaxy S21 FE does have thinner screen edges, making it a few millimeters smaller and less wide. At 177 grams, it is also somewhat lighter than the Galaxy A54, which weighs 202 grams.

Both devices have a plastic back, but the A54 has Samsung’s new design style. That is, the cameras come straight out of the housing. They are therefore not housed in an ‘old-fashioned’ island, as on the Galaxy S21 FE.

Furthermore, the S21 FE offers an IP68 certification, where the A54 gets stuck at IP67. What that means? The Galaxy S21 FE must be able to survive for half an hour at a depth of 1.5 meters. The Galaxy A54 also lasts 30 minutes under water, but that may not be more than 1 meter deep.

That difference can become important if you drop your smartphone in the pool. However, you don’t have to worry about a heavy rain shower with these phones.

Which one should you buy?

That’s it, our Samsung Galaxy A54 vs Galaxy S21 FE comparison. The differences are quite clear: the S21 FE is above all a lot faster, has a slightly nicer design and has a telephoto lens that the A54 lacks. If you care about these things, the S21 FE is a better choice.

Do you appreciate the longest possible battery life? Then the Galaxy A54 has an advantage. Because this device is newer, you can also expect software updates for a year longer. However, you are also good with the S21 FE until at least 2026.
