Britain’s King Charles attended the traditional Easter service in the chapel of Windsor Castle. It is the first time he has attended a public event since he was diagnosed with cancer in January.

Charles and his wife Camilla were driven to the chapel in a car. Laughing, he waved briefly to the press and public and then went inside. Other family members, such as his sister and brothers, are also present at the celebration. The chapel is where their parents Elizabeth and Philip are buried.

Charles thanked the audience for wishing him a happy Easter, although his words were not clearly audible:

After the mass, Charles and Camilla walked to the waiting audience. They shook hands and spoke to some people.

Charles has hardly appeared in public since his diagnosis, most public appearances were canceled. Last Thursday, “much to my sadness”, he missed the celebration of Maundy Thursday, traditionally also a moment when the British monarch meets his subjects.

Charles continued to work behind the scenes. So his conversations with Prime Minister Sunak continued and he received dignitaries. Most of what the public has seen in recent weeks have been photos released of him or snapshots of him driving by in his car, waving.

Cautious step

Charles, 75, was admitted to hospital at the end of January for prostate treatment. Cancer was also diagnosed, the type of which has not been disclosed. Charles is currently being treated at home.

It is not yet clear when the king can resume his duties. The BBC emphasizes that his church visit today should not be seen as the starting signal. “This is not a resumption of public appearances, but a cautious step back into the public eye.”

Absent from today’s service were Charles’ son William and his wife Kate, who has also been diagnosed with cancer. She announced a week and a half ago that she was being treated and that she would not be making any public appearances for the time being.
