Brewery Het Drankorgel from Mol, best known for its ‘Geelse’ Vals Paterke beers, has won a gold medal at the international beer competition in Barcelona with a custom beer. This happened in the very busy ‘Belgian tripel’ category.

It was not the first time that Ivan Geudens from Het Drankorgel participated in the Barcelona Beer Awards. This is the most important beer competition in the south of Europe, with more than thirty categories and more than a hundred subcategories. Exactly five years ago, Geudens presented his Vals Paterke Goud and Vals Paterke Dubbel to the jury. To his surprise, he then brought silver and bronze back to the Kempen in his luggage.

This year he participated at the request of De Witte Kragen, a beer tasting association from Dilsen-Stokkem in Limburg. “I have been brewing custom beers for this purpose for several years,” says Ivan Geudens. “I submitted both Witte Kraag Tripel and their latest beer ‘Den diene en de miene’, a blond beer of 6.5 percent. The Witte Kraag Tripel was the first beer I ever brewed for the association. In the meantime, it has been on the menu in Dilsen-Stokkem for years. It is a triple of 9 percent.”

Pick up yourself

Die Witte Kraag Tripel was entered in the ‘Belgian tripel’ category, one of the most popular types of beer in the world. It is by no means only Belgian-made tripels that compete, because this is typical all over the world Belgian style beer is brewed. “To win gold in such a busy ‘Belgian Tripel’ category is a great boost. De Witte Kragen and I are very pleased with the gold medal. We therefore collected the prize together personally in Barcelona, just like I did five years ago,” says Ivan Geudens. (ho)
