A historic Beaverton building that has been an eyesore in recent years is on its way down, later to emerge as a Dollar General Market.

The City of Beaverton sold the old Roman Motors to Dollar General, and it was time for it to come down, said Beaverton City Manager Shannon Sirpilla. The market is expected to open within the next five months.

“The foundation was completely rotted out,” she said. “It was a hazard. If a car hit it, it would have completely collapsed.”

The city purchased the property along with the house and the old Roman Motors on Dec. 17, 2018. The city signed the deed over to Dollar General on Friday, March 29, 2024. Sirpilla said contractors started working on taking the building down the same day of signing.

The company expects to have the new market erected with the next few months after tearing down the old business and house.

Sirpilla said this means taking down an eyesore and generating tax dollars, water and sewer revenue and jobs.

“I’m happy to see something on the tax rolls and not a building sitting dormant,” Sirpilla said.

The company didn’t express any plans to close Beaverton’s existing Dollar General to the north of the 416 Ross Street development.

Also, the Beaverton design will be different than the Gladwin Dollar General Market. The slim side will face the road and the longer side will face southbound M-18. Part of the agreement with the city is that the company will put up trees.

“I’m excited to see the growth in the city,” Sirpilla said. “The old building was beyond repair. I’m excited to see a development company step up and clean up a hazard and generate tax dollars.”
