The A73 highway was closed in both directions near Vierlingsbeek on Monday evening. This was the result of a major accident that happened near neighboring Venray, in North Limburg. According to the ANWB, seven cars were involved in the accident. The right lane was reopened in both directions around 9 a.m.

The accident happened around six o’clock in the direction of Nijmegen. After the severity became clear, it was decided to also close the road in the direction of Venlo to give emergency services space.

Traffic was advised to drive via Eindhoven and Oss (A67, A2, A50). This diversion route was no longer necessary after nine o’clock. A spokeswoman for the Limburg police only reported that she was aware of the accident and that one person had been injured.

Damage to guardrails
A spokesperson for Rijkswaterstaat added that the collisions caused damage to the guardrails in the central reservation. The damage was repaired later in the evening, which is why the left lane remained closed for a little longer.

Earlier in the evening, the road surface was cleared and recovery companies were given the opportunity to tow away two of the cars involved in the collisions. The other cars were not as damaged: their occupants were able to continue their journey.
