Around noon on August 10, 1991, cleaning staff at the Sheraton motel in Martinsburg, West Virginia, made a discovery in the bathroom of room 517 that was so disturbing that one of them fainted.

Lying naked in the bloody bathtub was a 44-year-old man named Danny Casolaro. His wrists had been cut dozens of times, the wounds so deep they had severed his tendons. Bloody handprints were smeared all over the wall.

There was also a razor blade in the bath. A half-empty bottle of wine sat nearby, empty beer cans were in the trash, and on the bedroom desk was what appeared to be a short and unsigned suicide note.

Of course it wasn’t suicide, it was murder. After all, Casolaro was convinced based on research that he had uncovered a shadowy international political conspiracy that reached into the heart of the American government.

He had found evidence that profits from the CIA-organized drug trade were being used to finance covert operations that Congress did not authorize. A bit like the Gladio B program.

In many cases this involved the supply of weapons to dubious allies abroad.

It was a conspiracy that linked crises such as the Iran hostage crisis in 1979, the Iran-Contra scandal in the mid-1980s and the collapse of the fraudulent Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI) in 1991.

Casolaro dubbed the sinister cabal at the heart of these events “the Octopus,” linking each of its eight tentacles to a former powerful government official, most of whom had once headed the CIA. Even President George HW Bush, himself the agency’s former head, was there.

There is also a link to our country. Michael Riconosciuto claimed that he had worked on weapons programs for the Wackenhut Corporation, such as a powerful “fuel air explosive”. Wackenhut also appears in the file of the Gang of Nijvel.

On March 29, 1991, eight days after filing the affidavit, Riconosciuto was arrested for and later convicted of distributing methamphetamine and methadone, charges he said were a scheme to keep him from telling his story.

Another link is the murder of Juan Mendez. After all, he was murdered because of the Douglas Stowell case.

The murder of Casolaro is central American Conspiracy: The Octopus Murders on Netflix.
