Last year Maxim Van Gils broke through with some nice places of honor in the spring. This year the young Belgian from Lotto Dstny confirmed this spring.
Third in the Strade Bianche, seventh in Milan-San Remo, third in the Flèche Wallonne and fourth in Liège-Bastogne-Liège. Maxim Van Gils (24) only won the short time trial in the Ruta del Sol, but was still one of the best Belgians of the spring.
“It was a very positive spring. I was very consistent and actually rode well in every race. I am very satisfied with it,” says Van Gils at Cycling flash. Yet Van Gils still sees room for progression.
Van Gils wants to score in the Tour and at the World Cup
The next goal for Van Gils is the Tour. He already rode the Tour last year, and he was also at the start of the Vuelta in 2022 and 2021. Last year, Van Gils finished second in a stage in the Tour, having only Kwiatkowski ahead of him on the Grand Colombier.
“This year I really want to perform and get results. Winning stages will be very difficult, it is the Tour, but that is the big goal,” says Van Gils. And the young Belgian still has ambitions this year.
“At the end of the year there will be a great World Cup in Zurich. That course should suit me and I hope to be there. Have I already spoken to the national coach? We always chat a bit, so yes,” says him yet.
