But there is more to it. There are different types of carats. In other words: the amount of pure gold present in the jewelry. For example, a piece of jewelry made of 24 carat gold consists of 99.9 percent gold and a piece of jewelry made of 9 carat gold consists of only 37.5 percent gold. So quite a difference. And then you also have gold-plated jewelry, which contains a thin layer of gold. These jewelry are often easier on your wallet, but over time the gold layer wears off. For that reason it usually lasts less time.
