Measuring boxes have been placed in a radius around the EMK site on the Krimpense Stormpolder. This checks whether no harmful substances are released during the work.

About forty years after the last activity, the cleaning of the heavily polluted EMK site in Krimpen aan den IJssel is underway. Contractor Dura Vermeer calls it “the largest remediation in the Netherlands”.

The site on the Stormpolderdijk previously housed a chemical waste processor. Previously, a coal tar factory was located there, which also released harmful substances. The soil has become heavily polluted over the years.

Now that the cleaning has started, there are still concerns among local residents and companies in the area. Partly because of these concerns, close attention is paid to whether the harmful substances are not spread further. That is why measuring boxes have been installed in Krimpen and Capelle aan den IJssel, among others.

The boxes monitor the air in the environment. This provides insight into whether the composition of the air is changing. It must then be investigated how this is possible, because this can be due to emissions of gases on the EMK site, but also, for example, from inland vessels that sail past. The measuring boxes remain in place for approximately two years.
