At least 55 people were injured in a collision between a subway train and a university bus in downtown Los Angeles. The accident happened around early afternoon (local time) on Exposition Boulevard, near the University of Southern California (USC) campus and the Natural History Museum.

Two people were seriously injured in the collision. They were taken to hospital. According to the fire brigade, this concerns the bus driver and a passenger who was on the bus. The AP news agency reports that they were the only two occupants of the passenger bus. More than 150 passengers were on the metro during the collision.

In addition to the two occupants of the bus, sixteen others also had to go to the hospital. According to the local fire department, their injuries were minor and they were in fair condition, the Los Angeles Times reports. 37 others were treated at the scene of the accident.

Crossroads

According to a spokesperson for the metro, the bus crossed the route of the metro line. The subway in question operated on a light rail line that runs from East Los Angeles to downtown Santa Monica. Most of that route is not underground, but at street level. Not all intersections have gates.

The police are further investigating the incident.
