‘A lot’ of rain fell last night, especially around De Bilt and Hilversum, says meteorologist Magdel Erasmus of Buienradar: about 20 millimeters in just a few hours. “Those showers moved over the middle of the country towards the Kop van Noord-Holland and then into the North Sea.”

Fire

The thunderstorms that accompanied those showers caused damage in at least three places. In Nederhorst den Berg (North Holland), lightning struck the roof of two terraced houses on Wethouder Bloklaan. This caused a fire. A baby, who may have inhaled smoke, was checked by ambulance personnel.

Elsewhere in North Holland, in Berkhout, a fire raged in the roof of a house after a suspected lightning strike.

In The Hague, a fire broke out in an apartment on the Haagweide. Sixteen homes were evacuated for a short time. Three are currently uninhabitable due to soot and water damage. The fire brigade also takes lightning strikes into account there.

Today promises to be a very pleasant day. This afternoon it may be warm for the first time this year, with 25 degrees in De Bilt. Except for a few showers in the morning, it is dry and sunny. Although there is a chance of a (strong) thunderstorm again in the southeast at the end of the afternoon.
