Bitcoin conference in the Vondelpark today: this is what you can expect

Today there will be one in the Vondelpark in Amsterdam bitcoin (BTC) conference to take place. The 131st edition of ‘bitcoin Wednesday’ starts at 7:00 PM, discussing various events from the past month. Among other things, the arrest of the founders of Samourai will be discussed, as well as the recent bitcoin halving.

‘Bitcoin Wednesday’, also known as Bitcoin Wednesday in Dutch, takes place every first Wednesday of the month. According to the organizers’ description, it is one of the longest running bitcoin conferences in the Netherlands. It preaches to be an open and informal program for anyone interested in cryptocurrencies and blockchain.

Two of the topics that will be discussed are the arrest of Samourai founders Keonne Rodriguez and William Hill. Samourai is the company behind ‘Samourai Wakket’, a crypto storage with privacy features. The wallets have a built-in ‘crypto mixer’, which makes transactions anonymous and inimitable.

The CEO and CTO were arrested on April 24 on suspicion of money laundering and transferring money without a permit. Prosecutors, including an FBI agent, say they facilitated $2 billion in illegal transactions. Criminals are also said to have laundered a total of $100 million with their service.

Past bitcoin halving

In addition to the Samourai arrests, the bitcoin halving discussed. The bitcoin halving is an event that takes place approximately once every four years. The halving applies to bitcoin mining; a process in which new bitcoins are created with computing power. Previously, 6.25 bitcoins were added for mining a so-called block. Now that has been halved to 3.125.

The inflow of bitcoin will therefore be a lot lower. While a month ago 900 bitcoins were added in a day, there are now 450. In addition, there is a maximum number of bitcoins that can be mined, namely 21 million. We are currently at 19.7 million bitcoins mined; So we have already come a long way. The last 1.3 million will be mined at a much slower pace.
