Everyone agrees that certain violations are not good, but they continue to happen. Using the phone behind the wheel, for example, or unnecessarily sticking to the left. Ignoring the barriers on the track is also one of them, and according to ProRail that is a rather big problem in the Netherlands. That is why new speed cameras will be activated today to prevent violations.

ProRail has been testing speed cameras at railway crossings for a while, but violators have not yet received any fines at home. Today the four speed cameras with issuing fines to people who ignore barriers and red signals. Cyclists and pedestrians will (unfortunately) not receive a fine at home, because they do not have a license plate on the back. The camera does count how many offenders there are without a license plate.

A total of 40 speed cameras

The goal is to provide the forty riskiest railway crossings with cameras. Each photo is assessed by a BOA and then processed by the CJIB. You can also object via the CJIB as you are used to. You will not find the fine on the CJIB website, but on the special ProRail website.

How much does the fine for a speed camera at the railway cost?

If you secretly cross the track with your car when the barriers close at a speed camera, you will receive a fine of 300 euros at home. If you are on a moped, it will cost you 210 euros. The speed pedelec also receives a fine at home, because it has a license plate. Important to know: you will also receive a fine if you cross too early, when the red lights have not yet gone out. The amounts were not devised by ProRail, but are simply the fines that the Public Prosecution Service came up with.

In April 2018 and December 2020, speed cameras were installed at railway crossings in Hilversum. The cameras issued more than 2,650 fines for ignoring the red flashing lights. ProRail saw positive results: ‘During the period of this trial, we saw the number of violations decrease by 50 to 60 percent.’ We will soon hear how successful the new speed cameras are.
