Friday, December 19, 2014 will go down in the history books as a pitch-black day for the Boghos family from Almelo. Around 2:15 p.m., Mrs. Boghos arrives home to find her husband, Sumbat Dawood, 74, lying on the floor in a large pool of blood. He was killed violently: his throat was slit.

Why was this originally Iraqi man, who moved using a mobility scooter, murdered? And above all: by whom? Questions that are still on the lips of the victim’s relatives today.

No traces of burglary were found. The dark-colored cap found in the home by Mrs. Boghos, which may have been accidentally left behind by the perpetrator, has not identified any suspects. And the murder weapon, a knife, which was found a kilometer away from the house of Sumbat and his wife, has also not led to a trace of the perpetrator. “Anastas, Sumbat’s son, is still wondering who and especially why the perpetrator killed his father,” writes the Peter R. de Vries Foundation. “The family experienced a lot of war in Iraq, and the fact that Sumbat was killed in the ‘safe’ Netherlands is shocking to them. The possibility that the perpetrator is someone he knows is also a terrible thought for Anastas. It ensures that he and his family are always on the lookout.”
