Households with a dynamic energy contract will receive money for the first time this year if they use electricity between 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM today. This is due to the nice summer weather, but also because of Labor Day.
Money added for electricity consumption
With a dynamic energy contract, electricity prices fluctuate every hour and the gas price every day. If there is a large supply of electricity (partly due to sun and wind) and little demand from companies and households, you pay less. And at times you can even receive money for electricity consumption. Today that is the case for the first time this year.
The reason is the nice weather. Lots of sun is expected. And the fact that it is slightly warmer than in recent weeks means that solar panels generate a little more power.
In recent years there have also been several days with negative prices, especially in spring. Because at high temperatures in the summer, solar panels become slightly less profitable.
Consumers receive 9 cents per kWh
The fluctuating market price today between 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM is -20 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh). The market price has already been negative several times. But on top of that there is a surcharge from the energy supplier and taxes.
If you include that, you are left with a price of -9 cents. And Zonneplan also charges -9 cents between 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM. With every dynamic contract you pay the market price, but surcharges can differ by a few cents.
It’s not just the weather that’s bad. What also plays a role is that Labor Day is celebrated in many European countries. If companies shut down, there is less demand for electricity. We also benefit from that.
Moving consumption can save euros
Households can make a profit by shifting as much power consumption as possible to favorable times of the day. And energy customers do this en masse on these days. Charging the electric car in particular can make a big difference. But washing machines, dryers and dishwashers will also run more often this afternoon. Customers with dynamic energy contracts can often plan this well. Energy consumption during negative hours can suddenly be four times higher than usual.
Shifting consumption to the hours in which you receive money is a nice game for many consumers. But it usually doesn’t yield more than a few euros. Yet even such a small amount is nice. And it is especially important that this financial incentive triggers behavioral change. If consumption shifts to those cheap hours, the green energy that is generated will in any case not be lost.
