Yes yes, the time has come! We’ve been looking forward to it for weeks, but now the game can finally begin: the Giro d’Italia starts! And we start with a hill ride, which heads from Venaria Reale towards Turin. In the Leader’s jersey This live blog will keep you informed throughout the day of what happens in the overture!

It is no coincidence that the start of the Giro d’Italia 2024 on May 4, 2024 is all about Turin. May 4 is a date that is central to the memory of the Torinesi, for which we have to go back 75 years in time. The Superga air disaster occurred on May 4, 1949, killing almost the entire selection of Torino football club.

Even though the ride is only 140 kilometers long, there are plenty of obstacles on the course. The first mountain points can be obtained after 48 kilometers on the Berzano di San Pietro (2.8 km at 5.3%), after which the peloton heads towards the Superga (8.2 km at 4.3%). After this obstacle, 25 kilometers follow in a downward direction towards the crucial obstacles of the day. From Moncalieri we head to the foot of the San Vito climb, which is 1.4 kilometers long at an average gradient of 9.8 percent.

After a short descent, the drivers can already get acquainted with the final straight line, but then a steep climb of seven kilometers at 6.8 percent awaits with the Colle Maddalena. This starts quite mildly with a kilometer of 2.1 percent, but then the road rises at an average of 7.5 percent. At the top of this hill there are still just over twenty kilometers left, half of which is in a descending line. Crucial, however, will be the second ascent of the San Vito, with its gradients of up to 16 percent. The second ascent was actually only added to the course at the last minute.

You guessed it: this ride is a match for final favorite Tadej Pogacar, who will of course first have to deal with outsiders such as Jhonatan Narváez (INEOS Grenadiers), Daniel Felipe Martinez (BORA-hansgrohe), Romain Bardet (dsm-firmenich PostNL). ) and Alexey Lutsenko (Astana Qazaqstan Team).
