Market entrepreneurs are given five years for a zero-emission zone

Market entrepreneurs have until 2030 to switch to zero emissions. In consultation with the market traders, the municipality has found a solution in the form of an annual exemption for the next five years.

From April 1, 2025, a zero-emission zone will apply in the city center of Groningen. Only companies and trucks that are emission-free are allowed to drive within that zone. An inventory study of the vehicles of market entrepreneurs shows that it is difficult for a large part of the market to make the transition to zero emissions by 2025.

All market traders, permanent place holders and seasonal place holders can apply for the exemption annually until 2030. The costs for this exemption have yet to be determined. The exemption is granted due to the lack of suitable emission-free vehicles and the long depreciation periods of current vehicles.

Moreover, the market is an important economic driver in the city center. Market traders have little or no alternatives other than selling their goods within the zero-emission zone.

The zero-emission zone is being introduced to improve air quality in the city center, limit noise pollution and create more space for pedestrians and cyclists.
