The party can start in Eindhoven: PSV was crowned national champion of the Netherlands for the first time in six years on Sunday afternoon. Despite a difficult start, Sparta was defeated 4-2 in the Philips Stadium. PSV once again proved that there is no size on the team.

A wave of relief came from the stands in the Philips Stadium after 68 minutes. All week long people in Eindhoven and surrounding areas were looking forward to a PSV championship celebration, but it was not that simple against Sparta Rotterdam. Until Olivier Boscagli scored the 3-2 goal with a beautiful volley and the party broke out in the stadium.

“Here in the south!” and ‘Stand up for the champion!’, among others, echoed from the stands. The tens of thousands of PSV supporters knew after Boscagli’s liberating goal: now it simply cannot go wrong, that 25th national title will really come. There was no longer any doubt that that title would come, especially after the 0-8 at SC Heerenveen last week.

Title stress

Yet PSV was overcome by title stress against Sparta on Sunday afternoon. Peter Bosz’s team played one of the fewest games in its own stadium, in fact: Sparta was simply better in the first fifteen minutes and ended up 0-1 through Metinho. He took advantage of Malik Tillman’s bumbling and an oversight by Joey Veerman.

Then the crowd got behind it and PSV put its affairs in order. Jerdy Schouten was alert to a corner from Veerman and saw the ball fall through his chest and Nick Olij: 1-1. A little later it became 2-1, after Luuk de Jong – he was one of the few who did reach his level – put good pressure. The captain remained cool and offered Johan Bakayoko an opportunity not to be missed.

Great joy

With such a lead, the tension is often lost this season, but not this time: Sparta quickly got back to 2-2, because Koki Saito shot the ball into the net via Boscagli. To the horror of the Monegasque, who is experiencing such a stable season. The joy was great when he managed to score himself after the break.

Because even in the second half things did not go well for PSV initially. Sparta started better again, but now there were no goals conceded. And in the 68th minute, Boscagli made it 3-2 with a fantastic volley from a free kick. And 10 minutes later, Jordan Teze ended all the tension by scoring a good shot from a counter: 4-2.

That’s it. And so PSV won the 25th national title in club history.

Benitez; Teze (88. Sambo), Ramalho (58. Lozano), Boscagli, Mauro Júnior (88. Van Aanholt); Schouten, Til (58. Saibari), Veerman; Bakayoko, de Jong (76. Pepi), Tillman.
