43. Volendam is losing courage by the minute
You wouldn’t think so, but this match is FC Volendam’s last straw to avoid relegation – if Volendam loses, it’s the end of the exercise. The team plays humbly, as if the players are already thinking about the match in the country Bingoal Stadium at the Prins Clausplein junction in The Hague.

36. Big chance for Vivaldo
Booth gets plenty of opportunity to deliver a tailor-made cross from the left flank and Vivaldo can head fairly unhindered. Fortunately for Ajax, he did not aim the header well, otherwise Volendam would have come alongside.

22. Brobbey makes a good play, Backhaus saves
The best Ajax player of this season will also be seen again this afternoon. Brobbey receives the ball on the edge of the box, sets himself free with a nice scissoring movement and then hits hard. Backhaus saves, but he has been warned about the Ajax striker’s hard punches.

14. Hard header Akpom on the roof
The striker comes high and puts his head hard against the ball, but it ends up on the roof above the keeper Backhaus.

9. Offside and no penalty
That’s where Ajax comes in handy: because Vivaldo is offside earlier, Rulli’s foul does not count. This is how Ajax escapes a penalty kick.

7. A VAR check for a possible penalty for Volendam
Rulli grabs the ball and torpedoes a Volendam player. Does the ball hit the spot?

3. Schotje van Godts
And the Amsterdam team’s first goal attempt is a fact. Mika Godts dribbles in from the left flank, but the roller is no problem for Volendam keeper Backhaus.

Make or break for FC Volendam
FC Volendam enters with the knife between its teeth, because if the team loses it can go to Emmen, Dordrecht and – if Vitesse goes well – to Arnhem next year. Volendam is 17th, seven points behind number sixteen Excelsior. Can Ajax benefit from this?

Henderson returns to the starting line-up
Jordan Henderson returns to Ajax’s starting line-up for the away match against FC Volendam. The midfielder suffered from a hamstring injury while playing for the England national team, which he sustained during an away match against Sparta in mid-March. He first recuperated in England and spent the past two weeks working on his recovery at Ajax.
Brian Brobbey starts as striker for the Amsterdam team. The attacker dropped out in the first half of the last match against Excelsior (2-2) with hamstring complaints.
Steven Berghuis is also back in the selection. The midfielder and forward starts on the bench. Berghuis has been sidelined since the end of February with a knee injury and back problems.
Steven Bergwijn and Benjamin Tahirović are suspended. Kristian Hlynsson is still injured.
Ajax line-up: Rulli; Rensch, Sutalo, Kaplan, Hato; Mannsverk, Henderson, Taylor, Akpom, Brobbey and Godts.

Welcome
Welcome to the live blog of the FC Volendam – Ajax match. Fifth place is the maximum achievable for Ajax in the Premier League this season. However, the Amsterdam team lost points against Excelsior last week, meaning fifth place is far from certain. NEC is two points behind Ajax, FC Utrecht has three points less than the team of coach John van ‘t Schip.
