Since 2021, police employees, among others, can stop working up to three years before they reach state pension age. This is a temporary arrangement that the police unions want to make permanent. Despite previous actions in The Hague, this has not yet been achieved.

No perspective

On Friday afternoon we received a response to our ultimatum, says project leader Maarten Baas of the National Police Action Center. “But the invitation in that letter to sit down again did not offer us sufficient perspective.”

That is why officers are starting actions today ‘where it affects the decision makers and policy makers’: in their wallets. Officers no longer issue fines for minor violations. Instead, they give a warning and hand over a promotional voucher with information about their wishes.

It is up to the police officer to decide whether the situation is suitable for this or whether a fine should still be issued. Minor violations include, for example, fishing outside the fishing season and presenting household waste too early. But also speeding violations.

There is no end date on the promotion. In fact, there are already plans to take more serious actions. When asked, Baas does not want to say anything about those plans. “We do not want to make our negotiating partners wiser than they are.”

Police employees are not the only ones taking action for a permanent early retirement scheme. Employees in construction, ports and public transport also want to take work breaks if no new arrangement is introduced.

Trade unions FNV, CNV and VCP (which includes the police unions) have issued an ultimatum to the State for this, which expires on May 14. In their view, the State must do more to set up a permanent early retirement scheme.
