Natasja Gibbs cleverly focuses on the murder of the Curaçao politician Helmin Wiels.
On May 5, 2013, politician Helmin Wiels was shot dead in broad daylight in Curaçao. The murder shocks the island, and after a manhunt three perpetrators are arrested – including former minister George Jamaloodin. Yet eleven years later, there are still many people who believe that perpetrators are still at large.
Journalist Natasja Gibbs, who was doing an internship in Curaçao at the time of the murder, travels Wiels the murder case back to the island to delve deeper into those theories. She speaks with fellow party members, Wiels’ brother and his bodyguard, and it soon becomes clear that the populist politician, who often spoke about corruption, upset enough people.
Ultimately, the podcast is not only a true-crime series but also, through Gibbs’ tenacity and sharp interviews, a portrait of a politician who turned Curaçao upside down and the consequences of his death. Wiels the murder case thus provides a deep, nuanced picture of an underexposed political murder in the Netherlands.
