From July 1, account holders of Rabobank and the three de Volksbank banks (SNS, ASN and RegioBank) will pay significantly more for their payment package. ING and bunq previously also increased the costs for their current accounts.

SNS Bank, ASN Bank and RegioBank announced that customers will pay 50 cents more per month. That is 6 euros more per year. That seems like a modest increase, but account holders at the three banks will soon pay 16 to almost 19 percent more than they currently do.

Rabobank has also announced a rate increase as of July 1. Customers will pay 25 cents more per month. The cheapest payment package will soon cost more than 8 percent more than now.

It seems as if the banks have followed each other well. Because from July 1, you will pay exactly 3.20 euros per month at both ASN Bank and Rabobank, or 38.40 euros per year. In recent years, ASN Bank generally had the cheapest account.

Bank charges higher costs

According to de Volksbank, the reason for the increases is that the bank brands are faced with higher costs from legislation and regulations. “The bank cannot avoid passing on part of these costs,” says a spokesperson.

The price increases are striking because both Rabobank and de Volksbank saw their profits almost double in 2023, as they benefited from interest rate increases.

The costs of current accounts have already doubled in the past five years, the Consumers’ Association noted in February. These price increases are on top of that.

ING and bunq are also more expensive

ING and bunq also recently increased the rates on their current accounts.

At ING, the costs of a standard Orange Package increased by almost 16 percent from March 1 to 3.65 euros per month (43.80 euros per year). ING also has a discount rate, but then you pay 80 cents each time you want to withdraw money with your bank card.

Bunq even asks 33 percent more. The cheapest Easy Bank Personal package now costs 3.99 euros per month, which means 47.88 euros per year. New customers will pay one euro more from March, existing customers from May 1.

bunq has also announced that it is facing higher costs. “We also continue to invest in the development of features that enrich the lives of our users,” says a spokesperson.

When asked, ABN AMRO stated that it would not announce a price increase in the coming months.
