With videoJonathan Milan has won the fourth stage of the Giro d’Italia. Just like the day before, there was a dangerous attack on the last hill. Time trial specialist Filippo Ganna just couldn’t last to the finish and in the bunch sprint it was his compatriot who won. Olav Kooij fell short and finished fourth.
The last kilometers of the stage took the peloton over the roads of the spring classic Milan-San Remo to the finish town of Andora. The flat stage could still go in any direction, with the short Capo Mele climb a few kilometers from the finish. Filippo Ganna took the attack and that was not the first time today.
The two-time world time trial champion felt good in this fourth stage. He jumped away at the start, but the reputation of fast rider Ganna made the peloton alert. The leading group barely had any space, causing the Italian to drop back. Francisco Muñoz, Stefan de Bod and Lilian Calmejane stayed ahead for a long time, but the last riders were caught just before the final climb.
Then Ganna tried again. He broke away from the peloton and almost single-handedly managed to stay ahead of the sprint trains. His attempt foundered within sight of the harbor and the fast men of the platoon thundered over it. In the sprint, Jonathan Milan won by force majeure, on this day exactly one year after his first stage victory in the Giro.
Olympic champions
The protagonists of this stage Ganna and Milan are teammates in the team pursuit in track cycling and won Olympic gold and the world championship together in 2020.
“We saw Ganna go full throttle on the last climb,” the winner of the day looks on with a chuckle. He knows better than anyone how difficult it is to catch up with the time trialist. “We caught him with nine hundred meters to go. way he even helped us with that attack.” Due to his attack, the speed on the final climb was so high that not all top sprinters were at the front in the final kilometers.
“It’s a great sensation to win here again,” said Milan. It was exactly one year to the day since he won his first Giro stage. “It is very special because my parents were here now too.”
Kaden Groves came second, Phil Bauhaus third. Olav Kooij was the best Dutchman in fourth place. Tadej Pogacar remained in the pink jersey.
Falls in the rain
During the stage the riders had to deal with a lot of rain showers. It therefore became dangerous on the descent and that ultimately cost Biniam Girmay his head. The Eritrean was one of the favorites of this stage, but he crashed with, among others, classification rider Ben O’Connor.
In the pursuit of the peloton, Girmay crashed again and was in too much trouble to continue his way. He didn’t get on again.
