Kieskompas is live: ‘You will never agree 100 percent with a party’

There is still one month to decide who you will vote for during the European Elections on June 6. If you don’t know yet or are just curious, a voice assistant can help you get started. Kieskompas, one of those voting aids, has been live since today, says Jeroen van Lindert of the online voting aid. ‘An important topic is European cooperation. Do you want to continue it?’

The Electoral Compass for the European Elections is desperately needed. There are still many floating voters and European politics is somewhat further removed from the people than Dutch politics. ‘I hope that our Voting Compass can help people to understand themselves a little more,’ says Van Lindert.

Kieskompas follows the same protocol as in the Dutch elections. A lot of research is being done into what issues are currently happening in society. An important topic is European cooperation. “Do you want to continue this or do you perhaps want to get rid of it completely, like with a Nexit?” he says about a current topic. ‘It is also a lot about asylum, immigration, nature and the environment.’

Further research is important

There are also people who complete the Electoral Compass and end up in no man’s land. According to Van Lindert, it can help to select important themes. This can shift the political landscape, because certain parties are closer to the voter on certain issues. ‘But you will never completely agree with a party 100 percent. And then you have to investigate further.’

And this further deepening is important, because voting solely on the basis of the Electoral Compass is not wise, says Van Lindert. Research by Kieskompas also shows that almost no one does that. ‘A few percent really say: “I filled it in, this is what I came up with and so I will also vote for that party.” Fortunately, 95 percent also think for themselves.’
