The price of döner kebab in Germany has almost doubled in recent years. Why has the famous sandwich, which sells no less than 1.3 billion (!) per year at our eastern neighbors, become so expensive?
This question is now also occupying politicians. The price of the popular dish has risen from 4 to about 8 euros; Here and there you even have to pay 10 euros. Sellers blame this on rising rent, energy and food prices, but left-wing parties want nothing to do with this. They are now calling for a national price ceiling for the oriental hot meat sandwich with garnish and sauce.

The people want Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) to tackle ‘dönerflation’ seriously. The left-wing party Die Linke is now calling for a maximum price of 4.90 euros and believes that a döner kebab for young people should only cost 2.90 euros. In fact, Die Linke also wants to hand out free ‘döner vouchers’ to poorer households.
Die Grünen, a party that opposes the meat industry, also calls for attention to the tricky meat sandwich issue. They call the döner kebab for young people ‘as important as finding a house’.
Scholz doesn’t want it
It is unlikely that such a price ceiling will actually come into existence. Scholz does not want to start it, because he finds the plan impracticable in a free market economy. There are also no other examples in Europe of dishes or drinks on which the government has placed a price limit.
